An Evening Suburban Symphony

(November 15, 2003)

Shadows in the darkness,
moonlight in the dusk;
shades drawn,
streets lit,
amphitheatre set.

Choruses of lone TVs
     punctuated mumblings,
     muffled melody.

Waves of traffic
     whisper, wash—
     distant lullaby.

Canines echo
     short, sharp—sure;
     offbeat back beat.

Crickets dance
     pirouette and two-step:
     contemplative muse.

Bullfrogs flirt
     amphibious Barry White,
     sensual sonnet.

Muted breezes slide
     brushing leaves,
     caressing counterpoint.

Solo bird song
     peppy piping—pause:
     subdued finale.
